Tube Roll Design

Tube roll design is an organized process culminating in the production of a roll formed welded metal tube. First consideration is the products’ specific characteristics of size, shape and physical properties. The next consideration is the forming and welding machinery available to the producer. This includes mill capacity, mill condition, mill configuration, welder type and capacity, and cutoff type and capacity. Collaboration between the tooling manufacturer, the tube producer, and the mill manufacturer aid in choosing the forming techniques to be used. The most appropriate breakdown forming styles and fin pass design can provide many years of efficient production.

With these considerations in mind our roll designers use specialized software to develop the required progression of forming contours needed to bend and form flat metal into the finished product. The forming progression must coincide with each mill stand configuration and intended use. Once established, forming contours are digitally inserted into a database representation of each mill station. The software then loads the station with a predefined roll style that is dynamically reconfigured and adapted to the actual metal contour.

Our proprietary software dynamically applies all appropriate roll shaping techniques necessary to allow proper metal flow during the rolling process. This includes line and arc flaring, arc clearances, single and multi-arc corner radii, and forming progression “lookback” in order to accommodate the shape of incoming metal, etc.  Roll specifics can also be manually edited by the roll designer to further enhance the design.

Once all roll contours are finalized they are locked and saved. The data is then automatically transferred into CNC master code. The programs are compiled, post processed and all manufacturing programs are generated. They are then downloaded to a manufacturing database. Bar coding is automatically applied to all documentation used in the manufacturing environment. This seamless process requires no manual data entry and is therefore always error free.
